PedsMarkt Pediatric Marketplace
Children's Mercy Hospital Kansas
PROJECT
The Paediatrics team within Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City were looking for a way to commercialise the home-grown products and services they were building in-house by providing a marketplace for hospitals to sell pediatric products to other health professionals.
I was approached to create some initial concepts and deliver a design prototype to sell in the proposition to relevant decision makers in the hospital and help secure funding for the service. I also worked with one of my development partners to assess how to build this marketplace, including architecting, scoping and estimating costs. We considered a range of options including open source frameworks and white-label marketplace solutions.
PROCESS
In order to develop the proposition we ran a series of research activities, including focus groups, interviews and benchmarking to understand the process of both selling new pediatric products and the procurement procedures involved in purchasing them.
We considered a number of marketplace models, and mapped stakeholder journeys, from the perspectives of clinician inventors and buyers, Procurement, Licensing, Legal and other key hospital decision-makers, and the service design that supports them.
From here I led the design of an interactive prototype to demonstrate the key functionality, which was used to elicit buy-in and ultimately unlock the funding to build the marketplace site.
I also worked with my development partner company to create a set of costed options for build.
OUTCOME
The interactive prototype was instrumental in the team securing the funding to build the marketplace, which has since successfully launched and is in regular use today.
